Turning a good idea into global wow-factor… it’s what we do!

US newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane is credited with telling us a picture is worth a thousand words, and who are we to argue? While Mr Brisbane said this more than a hundred years ago, the influence that a powerful image can generate has changed very little. We might see these pictures online more often than we see them in the printed press these days, but their impact has never wavered.

A very recent development at Rose Media Group served to underline this perfectly. And it all came about because of some extremely cold weather, a photographer with an eye for something special and some extremely cute bears. The end result has been the generation of more than 360 pieces of coverage and an estimated nine million views around the world… in just four days!

PR specialists and a fabulous client – the perfect combination

The location for the fun and games was Woburn Safari Park, one of RMG’s favourite clients. After a particularly cold spell recently, the park’s gorgeous North American black bears took their first tentative steps on an icy patch of standing water and proceeded to interact with each other in a particularly charming (and photogenic) way. Mother bear Phoenix, accompanied by youngsters Aspen, Maple, Colorado and Harvard provided us with unforgettable images in no time at all.

Images of the bears on ice instantly became a striking visual trope that captured attention and sparked conversations right around the world. The success of such images lies in their ability to evoke emotion, create memorable content and generate wide engagement across various media platforms.

Images that create the perfect PR buzz

Such emotionally engaging visuals have a significant impact on audiences, of course. Bears are powerful, charismatic creatures that are often associated with strength and majesty. Pairing this imagery with the unexpected element of them playing and dancing on ice adds a layer of humour, surprise and whimsy. This stark contrast creates a memorable visual that draws people in, eliciting a positive emotional response, whether it’s amusement, awe or even joy. Emotionally engaging content is more likely to be shared and remembered, which amplifies its reach.

The element of surprise is also a key driver of success. People are drawn to the unusual and the unexpected, and seeing an animal like a bear performing a graceful, human-like activity such as dancing is bound to capture attention. In a crowded media landscape where there’s constant competition for attention, this kind of striking visual ensures that the content stands out from the noise, making it more likely to be noticed and shared.

Around the world in a matter of minutes

Furthermore, shareability plays a major role. In the age of social media, content that is visually striking, humorous or quirky is highly likely to be shared among users. This organic sharing extends the reach of the campaign far beyond the initial audience, generating buzz and virality. The whimsical and fun nature of images like Woburn’s bears cavorting on the ice appeals to a broad demographic, making it suitable for various PR campaigns looking to engage a wide range of consumers.

In PR terms, such images are highly effective because they combine emotional engagement, surprise and shareability—key ingredients for creating successful, attention-grabbing content.
